4) Kodai Senga
Then there’s Kodai Senga. The other starting pitcher whose name seems to appear in every Mets trade rumor out there, it would make sense for the Mets to put their fath in him. He was on a Cy Young trajectory early in 2025 before his injury.
You don’t trade Senga unless you’ve completely lost faith. How can you? The guy has been one of the best pitchers in the league at times. It doesn’t seem like the Mets are going to get a great value in return for him, hence the lack of a deal so far.
Finding a landing spot for a pitcher is difficult because just about every ball club is a match. Paid $15 million over the next two years, as much as I’d like to think the Tampa Bay Rays would, they probably wouldn’t. That’s a rich contract for them.
What about the Los Angeles Angels? They have Alek Manoah and Grayson Rodriguez in their projected rotation behind Yusei Kikuchi and Jose Soriano. Reid Detmers spent all of last year pitching in relief. They certainly have the need and aren’t about to punt this coming year. The difficulty here is finding anything of value they can even send to the Mets. That’ll be the bigger hindrance.
Let’s do this with Senga. The best trade destination for him is one we don’t even know about yet. The Mets hold steady with their rotation and a late February injury somewhere else provides us with a clearer image. Suddenly, the Mets see a way to improve another part of their team while ridding themselves of some excess.
