2) Mark Vientos
If not Baty, Mark Vientos would be another position player we see traded. His reputation is much different. He had a strong 2024, a lousy 2025 but with some hints he’s not cooked, and doesn’t have any defensive versatility whatsoever. If his glove attended a yoga class it would stay in the back because of how inflexible it is. Remember when the ball literally went through his glove?
Vientos has a clear role on the Mets. He’s their DH and maybe first baseman some days. Third base? He’ll get there after he singles and the next hitter in the lineup hits a double a faster runner would have scored on.
Complicated in different ways, the decision to trade Vientos would be disappointing only because we saw how truly magnificent he can play in his first full season in 2024. Other ball clubs should have some of those same feelings. If they have an available spot at first base or DH, they should come calling.
The Pirates make a little sense for Vientos, but it’s the San Diego Padres who make more. They had an even better relief corps last year and questions at the two main roles Vientos would take on, first base and DH. Vientos could help headline a variety of trades, a bullpen arm being the most sensible for the Mets at the moment.
