5 NY Mets players we could still see traded before Opening Day and where it could be

Five Mets who could still get traded before the season begins and a place (or more) that might make sense.

The New York Mets feel so close to having a complete roster and yet there remains a wide range of possibilities before we get to Opening Day. The team has a question in left field, a potential available spot on the bench, and one too many starting pitchers unless they plan to use a six-man rotation. A six-man rotation doesn’t seem like it will fully resolve the question of last year’s staff. What’s more, the limitation of the roster spots they could instead use on relievers should deter them from a full-blown use of six starters. Why else is Tobias Myers here other than to get spot starts?

The Mets can do a lot more, a little more, or somewhere in between. A quick guess, they trade one more player with a strong possibility of a second.

Who will it be and why, but also, where will they land?

1) Brett Baty

Trade buzz around Brett Baty picked up as soon as Bo Bichette was signed. Now replaced at third base, Brett Baty is a valuable player the Mets can have him play all over the field: even left field!

Baty had a strong finish to the 2025 season before his September injury. He’ll be healthy to start 2026 and whether he actually is the Jeff McNeil replacement on the roster or not has yet to be seen. A lot of teams are still without a third baseman they truly like. Check what fans in other cities are saying and they have Baty circled as an intriguing trade option.

The wild thing about a Baty trade is there are really only two outcomes that make sense. He’s either dealt in a package alongside someone else for a starting pitching improvement or for relief help. Otherwise, why are the Mets parting with him at all?

With Baty, it’s a matter of the Mets deciding on how useful he can be this coming year. They shouldn’t deal him just to capitalize on his high value right now. They have to truly immediately win any trade involving him.

Where could he go? The Pittsburgh Pirates have a clear opening at third base and I’d be doubtful they end up with Eugenio Suarez. They had one of the better bullpens in baseball last year. It seems like a strong, quieter match. Apparently, the Mets had interest in several younger pitchers pitcher, namely Bubba Chandler who ranks as one of the best prospects in the sport.
