3) Justin Garza
Another one of those midseason acquisitions by the Mets not really doing a whole lot, Justin Garza doesn’t have a lengthy future with the organization. At 31 and with unimpressive results during his cup of coffee with the team this year, Garza is in danger of being DFA’d by the time we get to the trade deadline.
Garza was traded to the Mets with an opportunity to be one of those quiet steals David Stearns routinely attempts to find. A lifetime 5.70 ERA in the majors (5.40 with the Mets this year) aren’t promising. Nor is the 10.38 ERA he has posted in Triple-A for Syracuse.
Struggles were already present when Garza was in Triple-A for the San Francisco Giants in Sacramento; Luis Severino’s least favorite place to pitch. A 6.11 ERA when acquired, he’s in the middle of a bad year at all three landing spots.
Garza’s roster spot is better utilized on a younger and/or better one. Where you might want to justify keeping Adcock because the results are better and he is younger, the same doesn’t apply here. Surely there must be another scrap heap addition either via waivers or player for cash trade the Mets can find to improve this 40-man roster spot.
