1) Jeff McNeil
This is a given. There is far less of a reason to have Jeff McNeil around. A failed attempt to trade him could conceivably shift him to the bench. However, McNeil just isn’t the kind of guy who fits perfectly in a limited role. A platoon, perhaps, could be justified. A start once or twice a week would just bring out Angry Jeff.
McNeil has only one year left on his contract guaranteed and at a rate under $16 million. Depending on what the Mets do, they may have to eat a part of the deal. It’ll be a necessity because at this moment there isn’t room for McNeil any longer.
It was a shaky year at the plate with some of the same patterns as Senga but not to the extremes. McNeil’s slump at the plate was more representative of the Mets team itself. He didn’t crash like Senga. He slowly slid down, batting only .187 in September after a strong August where he hit .276.
No longer someone we can count on to challenge for a batting title, it’s time to move on from McNeil. He can bring a team versatility which has its appeal. The Mets appear on a mission to alter the roster to its literal core. McNeil will undoubtedly be traded.
Prediction: The Mets get back more than we thought they ever could for McNeil.
