2) Kodai Senga
If Stearns was willing and able to find someone to take on Brandon Nimmo, he’s going to be ambitious enough to find a match in a Kodai Senga trade. We’re not so much caught off guard by seeing his name mentioned in trade rumors because of how horribly he collapsed late last year. A very reasonable $15 million per year contract that is only guaranteed for two more years makes him easily movable. It’s a matter of finding the right match, getting something in return, and improving the rotation with a separate move.
This one doesn’t feel like noise like the Nimmo rumors did. Senga is a complicated player who has only made 4 starts for the Mets on what would be considered regular rest. Having him around requires the need for a six-man rotation on a regular basis. Perhaps frustrated by this as well, it’s easy to understand why he won’t be a member of next year’s ball club.
The challenge for fans is thinking of what kind of trade could actually work. If the Nimmo-Semien swap is any indication, trading him for a player with strengths in other places but some weaknesses too is what’ll happen. Nimmo is a far superior hitter than Semien but the two don’t compare on defense.
Rumblings of who the Mets will trade this offseason from the starting pitching staff have recently been limited to Senga. The writing has been on the wall for so long, Post Malone is thinking about getting it tattooed on his face.
Prediction: The Mets stun us with a unique trade involving Senga.
