5 NY Mets players on the full 40-man roster in the most danger of being cut next

The 40-man roster is full. Who will be cut upon the next addition?

5) Dylan Covey

This is a bit more “far out” than some of the other choices. The Mets literally made Dylan Covey one of their first offseason additions. Either he or veteran Chris Devenski was the first to put ink to paper. Signed to a split contract where he’ll make one salary in the majors and another in the minors, the strategy the Mets have with him might simply be to slightly overpay for a guy best suited for a minor league job. This way, he’ll be less appealing to get claimed on waivers.

Something is seriously wrong with the Mets if Covey, a lifetime 6.18 ERA in 307.1 MLB innings, is on the Opening Day roster. A man who battled through injuries last year and hasn’t seen big league action since 2023 with the Philadelphia Phillies, he’s in a similar spot as Kranick except older, out of minor league options long ago, and has one of the more disgusting career ERAs for anyone who has logged over 600 innings.

Covey was essentially signed to be designated for assignment anyway. He was one of Stearns’ typical “backup plans” as he’d be able to provide the Mets with some long relief innings. They might not have such a luxury anyway with a six-man rotation. If the team experiences a rash of pitching injuries this season, Covey could turn out to be someone who is DFA’d multiple times; unless of course he pitches incredibly well. Someone else will come along and snag him.
