Add in Jesse Winker and A.J. Minter to the New York Mets roster and the club will sit at a full 40. How far we’ve come. Small, medium, and record-breaking offseason additions have now given the Mets a full yet incomplete roster. There’s still the need for additional moves.

With this in mind, there are a couple of Mets players currently sitting on the 40-man roster who might be a little more nervous about losing their spot. The next Mets roster addition could send them packing. It’s these five who could see their Mets’ lives flash before their eyes.

1) Jose Azocar

This is a fairly easy one. An out of options outfielder limited to a fifth outfielder spot, Jose Azocar was a late season pickup by the Mets last year to give them some depth. Specifically, they were looking for speed late in the year. Eventually, they found the right man for the job when Luisangel Acuna was finally called up.

Azocar has 397 big league plate appearances to his name, slashing .243/.287/.322 in those opportunities all coming with the San Diego Padres in each of the last three years. He’s not a bad player to have on your 40-man roster. Unfortunately, all of those coveted minor league options are gone. He’s either on the Opening Day roster or he’s DFA’d first.

There’s always a possibility the Mets DFA Azocar and keep him around. The same limitations they’d have with him exist for everyone else. You’d have to be a little more certain he’d actually make your club. At the moment, he gives the team a little bit of protection behind Jose Siri and Tyrone Taylor. If Azocar isn’t DFA’d soon, it’s because the Mets want to protect themselves with some sort of center field plan in case of injury.
