4) Mitch Keller

Mitch Keller isn’t a bad addition to make…but…is he the one trade target to invest in? Keller plus another starting pitcher can work well. Keller is a strong innings eater type of pitcher who’ll pitch to a low 4.00 ERA. The Mets craved a guy like that last season.

Considering the free agent market and how risky many of those pitchers appear and the length of the contracts they’ll seek, the end result of the Mets offseason seems to be a trade for a starting pitcher rather than a signing. Keller wouldn’t be the priority. Anything short of a swap for Jeff McNeil or other players that are disposable, even David Peterson to help relieve the Pittsburgh Pirates of salary, this feels a little too weak for the hard kind of punch we want the Mets to make.

Keller is a circumstantial trade acquisition for the Mets. Under the current terms they’re facing, they need to do better. Something tells me they will hold out until they can or realize they won’t be able to. At that point, maybe we do see them choose Keller. The biggest knock against trading for him is he needs to be one of two additions and Keller should be the weaker.
