2) Luis Robert Jr.
On one hand, I get it. Luis Robert Jr. is getting paid $20 million and the Chicago White Sox would be silly to not sell him this offseason. But if the good offers aren’t coming in, they might want to stick with him and see if he puts together a monster year even if they don’t compete. Other than financial reasons, there isn’t much incentive for the White Sox to sell low on Robert.
From a Mets perspective, center field doesn’t feel as urgent. The opening in left field (unless they move Juan Soto there which they should) should be the priority. There are so many other choices for that spot and to roll out with Tyrone Taylor to begin the year isn’t a travesty especially when the club is open to promoting Carson Benge quickly. They should feel the same way about Jett Williams, too.
The financials of the Mets, unfortunately, do seem to have their limits. Add Robert to the Mets roster and it may affect who they add to play another corner outfield position, first base, and maybe even the starting staff. Robert is an exciting player and yet it feels like the Mets can do better than take a gamble. Health concerns as well, he’ll be more appealing as a trade deadline acquisition in case of emergency rather than a guy to pay a large sum for now.
