Spring training is coming quickly, just not soon enough if you look outside at the weather. Who did what to make the gods of winter angry? The New York Mets roster is nearing its completion, we think, while a pretty large militia remains unsigned out in free agency.
All of the significant pieces seem to have already been added to the Mets while a small group of members from the 2025 season remain unsigned. The Mets have amazingly re-signed a single free agent all offseason, Richard Lovelady who has already been DFA’d.
These five Mets free agents remain without a job and finding one will have its challenges.
1) Griffin Canning
Someone’s going to sign Griffin Canning. Could it be the Mets? Recent rumors suggested they were at least toying with the idea.
It makes less sense now with Freddy Peralta. Other than trading away one pitcher and adding Canning to be a part of a six-man rotation, we should be bearish on the idea of the Mets doing something like this. Canning isn’t the rotation upgrade they’re missing.
Canning seems to be a good match as a contender’s number five or a non-contender’s immediate trade chip for July. A team like the Chicago White Sox, who have shown interest in Canning, make perfect sense. They’re actively adding some players this offseason even though they’ve subtracted Luis Robert Jr. Shortly after trading him to the Mets, they signed Seranthony Dominguez which should give their bullpen some stability while also making him someone to mark down as a top trade candidate in a few months.
Canning should have one of the easier times getting a major league contract. He’s a starting pitcher coming off of a good year. As long as his physical goes well, expect him to be one of the next players to sign.
