5) Julio Teheran

You might have forgotten about this member of the 2024 Mets. If so, don’t worry. You’re probably in a better headspace than the rest of us.

Julio Teheran made only one start for the Mets, coincidentally against the Atlanta Braves whom he represented for many years while torturing New York. It would end up as his lone big league appearance of 2024, lasting 2.2 innings with 4 earned runs across the board. The Mets immediately DFA’d him and he spent the rest of the year in the minors for other organizations.

Demand for Teheran, obviously, isn’t great. Staying healthy post-2019 when he last played for the Braves has been tough. With four different clubs, he has managed to go 4-9 with a 6.10 ERA in 110.2 innings. Clearly, he is a player whose peak is well behind him, so a minor league deal is all he can possibly hope for.

There is little harm for any team to bring Teheran to camp and stash him in the minors. Somehow the Mets even managed to win the game where he recorded 8 outs last April. Don’t say it didn’t matter. Because they finished in a deadlock with the Braves and Arizona Diamondbacks but had the tie-breaker over the latter, they were able to get into the postseason. Every out can matter.

According to the NY Post’s Jon Heyman, the Mets thought similarly when they offered Teheran a minor league deal several weeks ago.
