4) Pablo Lopez
Another pitcher apparently taken off the trade block, we’ll believe it when we see it with the Minnesota Twins. Joe Ryan is the far more intriguing pitcher. Pablo Lopez, with $21.75 million in each of the next two seasons left on his deal, seems more attainable.
Missing about half of last season, Lopez made 14 starts and had a 2.74 ERA. Previous to this past year, he made 32 starts in three straight seasons. Not quite an ace but an innings eater who can gobble up 180+ innings, the Twins can relieve themselves of a little more salary and maybe even improve their team with more than just Peterson.
Because they sold so heavily at the trade deadline there isn’t a whole lot more to pluck from. Minnesota needs to add to their roster this offseason for a chance to compete. The often open AL Central makes it possible to field a competitive team.
Peterson plus another MLB-ready player the Mets can spare would be the direction to take this. The biggest trouble here for the Mets is they’d be doing a deal with a team that doesn’t have quite the same incentive to reduce payroll urgently. Their bullpen could use some help. Do the Mets dare part with Dylan Ross alongside Peterson?
Makes sense if...the Twins get something else appealing in the deal.
