3) Boston Red Sox for Brayan Bello

This would be fun! While the primary focus seems to be swapping Baty left fielder Jarren Duran, a nice little swerve or addition would be for Brayan Bello to come to the Mets.

Bello is a bit of an outlier from some of these other pitchers. At 26, he has already signed a favorable extension with the Boston Red Sox that they could move on from. Just $6.1 million in 2026, he’s incredibly affordable for an increasingly painful Mets payroll that should have Steve Cohen painting every toilet he has gold in hopes of selling it.

Baty and more for Bello and Duran would help solve a couple of issues for both teams. Exactly what is it the Red Sox could use? Their surplus of pitching would seem to have them less interested in the top Mets pitching prospects. What about the guys a little less close to MLB-ready or a position-player-heavy deal? The versatility of guys like Jett Williams, A.J. Ewing, and slugger Ryan Clifford might bring some appeal.

The Mets and Red Sox were already a good trade match when the offseason began. In an ironic twist, moves by both teams have changed what worked best. Willson Contreras made Mark Vientos less of a need for Boston. Contreras was a well-known Mets trade target. Bichette, who was a potential Alex Bregman alternative, landing with the Mets has left the Red Sox with Eugenio Suarez as the top choice out there.

There definitely seems to be some major trade for these two clubs to make at some point. Something around Baty and Bello would be a fun one we didn’t originally think was on the table.
