2) Miami Marlins for Sandy Alcantara
Baty to the Miami Marlins is a trade scenario as old as time. It always seems like there’s a rumor about the Marlins having a desire to add him. The Mets turned down a trade involving him and Edward Cabrera. This was before they landed Bichette. Would things change now?
They can no longer trade for Cabrera with him heading to the Chicago Cubs instead. What about Sandy Alcantara? A former Cy Young winner who was a travesty to start last season only to piece it together late, he remains a superb match for the Mets. He shouldn’t cost anything close to what Skubal would. There have probably been just as many trade scenarios involving him to the Mets as there have been for Baty. It would only make sense for this to end up as one of the ways for both teams to finalize their offseason.
Something to consider with this trade is how much Alcantara is making. His $17.3 million salary ends up being far more because of the luxury tax penalties the Mets will pay. Is he the guy you want to essentially double the salary of? The Mets have very little they can subtract, Kodai Senga’s $15 million salary being the most reasonable at a high total they could send elsewhere.
Frankly, I’d prefer the Mets give up more and get a controllable, less expensive, or more stable starting pitcher. That doesn’t mean Alcantara is an impossibility.
