Nobody on the New York Mets roster seems more trade chippable (patent pending) than Brett Baty. The addition of the other Double-B, Bo Bichette, could mean there’s only room for one on the roster. Baty’s job as the starting third baseman has been taken, pushing him into a potential utility role where he could see time at first base regularly.

As useful as he can be and as promising as last year was, the Mets can use Baty’s high value at the moment to bring them a starting pitcher. The signing of Bichette eliminates them from signing Framber Valdez (they’re not giving up 2 more draft picks by signing him) so it’s the trade market they should focus on.

Who can they acquire to give their rotation that missing howitzer? These five starters should be at the top of the list.

1) Detroit TIgers for Tarik Skubal

Baty isn’t going to get the Mets Tarik Skubal. He can certainly help. Way back in mid-October, when the Mets offseason plans were such a complete unknown that Timothee Chalamet could have starred as David Stearns in the biopic about it, reports were the Detroit Tigers had some interest in Baty.

Formulating any kind of trade package for Skubal involves everything from prospect-heavy hauls to one that’ll help the Tigers compete immediately. A mix of both should suffice, too.

There isn’t a better player the Mets are set up to acquire than Skubal. It would be the exclamation point on an offseason full of question marks.

The real kicker when it comes to a potential Skubal trade is the $13 million difference in what he filed for versus what Detroit is offering. He wants $32 million in his last year of arbitration, the Tigers want to pay him $19 million. Things have potential to get real ugly, real quick between the two sides. To save face, a massive blockbuster with another team looking to save their offseason, the Mets, makes a whole lot of sense. With the Mets adding Bichette to their roster, the Tigers can obtain one more player to help them right now.
