4) Starling Marte, Jose Siri, and Jesse Winker will all have reduced roles by August 1
Not every prediction is glitz and glamour. Yeah, the Mets will have some phenomenal performances. They’re going to keep runs off the board and cross the plate a ton, too. But not every participant is going to be worth his weight in gold or whatever kind of currency they’ll try to sell your grandparents on daytime television by the time we get to August. Copper is a good guess, according to my 71-year-old uncle who has never moved out of his mother’s house. True story.
Here’s looking at you, Starling Marte, Jose Siri, and Jesse Winker. By the time we get to August 1, your role will be drastically reduced. Where does it all go wrong?
Marte will produce well enough, but the inevitable injury will cause him to miss the rest of the 2025 season. Siri won’t hit nearly enough at a consistent rate to justify keeping him around as anything more than a pinch runner and defensive replacement in center field. In Winker’s case, not enough consistent big hits against right-handed pitching will have the Mets wondering why they continue to put him out there at the DH spot more often than not.
The Mets have several solutions to this. While Marte rides out the rest of the season on the IL, they’ll navigate by playing Mark Vientos a lot more at the DH spot and allow Brett Baty and a healthy Ronny Mauricio to assume the role of third baseman on a more regular basis. Winker fades into the background, getting some spot starts in left field and in pinch hitting opportunities versus weak righties he’s supposed to hammer.
The Mets will be fine with all three performing below their own personal mean. A trade deadline acquisition helps resolve some of the problems. The more consistent albeit less thrilling Tyrone Taylor guides the team in center field with the team giving a final shot to Luisangel Acuna to prove he can handle the position.
