2) Griffin Canning leads the team in wins, but just barely

Who cares about baseball wins? For this bold prediction, we do. Jacob deGrom’s tenure with the Mets told us not to weigh them too heavily. However you feel about it, this year’s leader in W’s is the unlikely Griffin Canning.

An awesome spring featuring a 1.88 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 14.1 innings raised eyebrows. He showed last year he is capable of staying healthy and eating up innings. His 171.2 innings of work could come in handy for the Mets, we’ll just want him to have a much better ERA than the 5.19 he delivered to the Los Angeles Angels.

Last season’s Mets wins leader was Sean Manaea with 12. It’s probably a good guess as to the amount Canning would need. The team’s other three most regularly used starters finished with 10 or 11. The same thing should happen again this season.

Manaea’s absence to begin the year, Kodai Senga’s limitations, and the randomness of winning games for a starting pitcher will all come together. Canning doesn’t have to be amazing to accomplish this. Something along the lines of Carlos Carrasco’s 2022 season when he won 15 games with a 3.97 ERA (tied for the most with Chris Bassitt) is the way he can realistically make this prediction come true.
