3) Failing to find a way to have Dedniel Nunez and Max Kranick on the roster
The Mets will probably have Dedniel Nunez or Max Kranick on their Opening Day roster. Both? That may be pushing it. Kranick has absolutely earned his opportunity to pitch for the team out of the gate. Nunez, while we shouldn’t get too caught up in spring training performances, is a little iffier. We know he can get the job done at the major league level. Some injury concerns plus the number’s game of only being able to carry a certain number of relievers could make him the odd man out.
It’s a bit of a trickle down effect. If the Mets choose Megill for the rotation, Blackburn goes to the bullpen thus eliminating one more choice. DFA’ing Danny Young is one possibility. However, the lefty has been good enough in camp and might be worth keeping around at least a little while longer. Two left-handed relievers aren’t always necessary, but we’d have to imagine if Young was getting replaced it would be by someone such as Anthony Gose.
The Mets can dodge the spite of fans if Nunez ends up on the IL to begin the year. It’s a real possibility. It’s not completely necessary, though. Often we’ll see an out of options player conveniently get placed on the IL right before final roster cuts.
It seems the Mets will have at least one pitcher on the Opening Day roster taking up a spot the fans would prefer is reserved for somebody else.
