4) Alexander Canario
Yeah so, this is probably the favorite. Assuming all goes well for Alexander Canario in camp with the Mets, he should be the guy to snatch a roster spot in place of Marte. It was a questionable move by the Mets to trade for him in the first place considering he lacks minor league options. However, with the latest concerns about Marte’s health, it seems he’s a GEICO policy against missed time.
The most lateral replacement for Marte on the roster, Canario is a right-handed hitting outfielder who could easily become a platoon partner of some kind with Jesse Winker as the DH or at least play some defense while allowing Brandon Nimmo or Juan Soto some time off their feet. Some good power numbers in the minor leagues and even favorable totals in a limited 45 plate appearance sample in the majors, Canario does tend to strikeout a lot and that’ll be exactly what ends up costing him regular MLB action. There isn’t a scenario where he really makes much sense to stick around beyond a Marte IL stint with the exception of passing through waivers and sticking around in the minor leagues.
It might be safe to assume Canario is going to be the easy choice to replace Marte. Given how many outfielders the team already has, they’d benefit more from actually having an infielder instead. Canario gains an edge because of not having minor league options left. The Mets may prefer to see what he can do in a platoon-type role even at the cost of having less versatility on the roster.
