4 NY Mets players who feel like they may have played their last game for the team

Have we seen the last of them?

4) Rico Garcia

If it’s not Devenski who loses his roster spot for Helsley, it’s going to be Rico Garcia. An out of options reliever who wouldn’t be able to accept a minor league assignment without passing through waivers, he gave up his first run as a member of the Mets against the Padres.

A spectacular find for the Mets in free agency this offseason, there’s a good chance Garcia doesn’t leak through the waiver wire as easily as he did the last two times. He was picked up by the New York Yankees for a game only to return to the Mets. Practically every team in each league passed on him when available for free. Post trade deadline, and with a larger sample size, things could change. Garcia could be a contender’s backup plan or someone a non-contender wants to hold onto for innings or maybe even next year’s plans.

The better choice is to clearly demote Devenski and hold onto Garcia. It wouldn’t do much to save Garcia from sticking. The team would be one game away from needing to cut him or demote Reed Garrett; their lone reliever with minor league options.

No one thought we’d get much of anything out of Garcia. More than a nameless, faceless member of this year’s roster, we should be grateful if this is the end.
