3) Chris Devenski
Chris Devenski was pitching incredibly well for the Mets but became a roster casualty recently. After a few days in free agency, he re-signed a major league contract with the club. Could it be all over before it even began?
Devenski can be optioned to the minors if he accepts the assignment. He was willing to do so several times this year, most recently refusing because of how well he had been pitching. But no major league contracts must’ve come his way. So, he rejoined the Mets.
This could be a situation where Devenski chose the Mets out of convenience (moving is a pain) and would benefit financially for the days he pitches in the majors. The heavier details of his contract, which is currently for $1 million according to Spotrac, could be a split deal where he receives a little more money than the average minor leaguer while in Syracuse. The Mets have been known to do this with multiple players.

Regardless of what the language in the contract says, Devenski is one of two options to lose his roster spot when Ryan Helsley gets here. He gave up a home run in his most recent appearance. A demotion on August 1 would make him ineligible to return to the majors until mid-August outside of replacing an injured player. By then, there’s no telling how effective he’s performing or what the Mets need.
