2) Luisangel Acuna
If there’s one player for the Mets to trade from their infield surplus, Luisangel Acuna feels like the one to deal. He doesn’t play regularly. Minimal appearances in center field show us how they honestly feel about him at a position other than second base and shortstop where he is buried on the depth chart.
Acuna’s lack of offensive production in the majors and in Triple-A this year has him on the outs with fans. His blazing-fast speed and solid defense make him a role player. However, the ceiling feels to be the lowest of any of the players they could send away today in a trade to improve their team further.
The most practical outcome would be for Acuna to get traded to the Chicago White Sox in a package for Luis Robert. The White Sox have had interest in him and Mark Vientos, according to the rumor mill.
If the Mets were to add to their MLB roster and not trade away one of the young infielders, it’s Acuna who’d be sent to the minors anyway. He might not hold much weight on the trade market and with a demotion, the Mets could lose his final minor league option for next year. It’s at the point where Acuna is clearly not a part of the club’s future, despite how useful he can be off the bench.
