3) Chris Devenski
A far more familiar name, the important thing to keep in mind with Chris Devenski is he wasn’t a part of the most recent Houston Astros team to win the World Series. He hasn’t been there since 2020 nor has he been a particularly good pitcher. A fantastic rookie season in 2016 followed up by an All-Star campaign in 2017, Devenski did the majority of his damage as a freshman and sophomore then faded into the bottom part of the bullpen when he was healthy or in the majors.
From 2018-2024, has logged 211 relief innings. The results are an ugly 5.42 ERA. He is coming off of a year with some time served with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Mets are keen on guys coming over from that organization. However, with a 6.75 ERA in his 26.2 innings of work there, he isn’t exactly coming to New York with even Jake Diekman-like expectations.
It has been far too long since Devenski was a noteworthy reliever in the big leagues. Post-2019, only the 2023 campaign has featured more than 40 innings of work. Already in his mid-30s with his best years nearly a decade in the past, it would be an astonishing turn of events for him to step foot on the mound for the Mets in a MLB game.
