Pumping up the volume for every little move the New York Mets make is only natural this time of year. The weather is frightful. Eczema is appearing in places where it never had before. You’ve gained a couple of extra pounds but no one has noticed because you refuse to wear anything but the faded hoodie you’ve owned for more than a decade.
Since we’ve turned the calendar over to 2025 and the next baseball season will begin before we know it, some reality should begin to set in. Not every minor league addition by the Mets this offseason is going to give us Jose Iglesias vibes. In fact, these players are likely to quickly become irrelevant.
1) Anthony Gose
I can appreciate the creativity with giving Anthony Gose a chance to continue his path at becoming the next position player to convert to a pitcher. Successful in some ways and not so much in the ones that matter most, using your attention on a 34-year-old project like him feels more like someone is providing a favor. Many of the offseason additions made by the Mets have intrigue to them. Gose, who couldn’t even cut it for more than 4.1 innings with the Cleveland Guardians last year despite good numbers in Triple-A, is one of them.
With the Guardians officially cutting their losses after several years of trying to make Gose happen as a pitcher, it’s a surefire sign that there probably isn’t much to cook up with him moving forward. Gose had been with the organization since 2019 with several instances of re-signing with them. They’re an organization capable of developing bullpen arms as well as anyone. If they’re finished, I tend to believe them.
Gose has managed to log only 32 innings in parts of three seasons with the Guardians. A 4.78 ERA was the end result. The 2022 season provided the largest sample in any one year. A magnificent strikeout rate of 12 per 9 hardly made up for a walk rate of 6 per 9.
It’s hard to imagine too many scenarios where Gose actually gets a chance to pitch for the Mets outside of multiple injuries or an irrelevant couple of games in September.
