Adding superstar talent without talking to Scott Boras is very possible.

4) Framber Valdez

One of the better pitchers in the American League over the last few seasons, it seems like Framber Valdez doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Overshadowed by other stars on the Houston Astros, he’s a free agent after this season and someone the Mets should seriously consider.

Health has been kind to Valdez about to embark on his age 31 season. He has seasons of 22, 31, 31, and 28 in a row with consistent results every year. He’s a winner and should garner plenty of attention as a free agent next year. It would be a massive change in the process for the Mets to actually go after him as they’ve stayed away from lengthy deals, especially with older pitchers.

Valdez is currently represented by Octagon so there’s no dealing with Boras to do to cut a free agent deal. The Mets will have needs in their rotation but exactly how many remains unknown. Kodai Senga probably won’t trigger his opt out which would require him to log a league-leading innings total. Frankie Montas has an option and who knows what David Peterson’s status will be? Odds favor the Mets avoiding any big deals with starting pitchers in free agency. If it means they don’t have to deal with Boras, maybe they reconsider.
