3 former Yankees players the NY Mets could target but for only one reason

All three did one thing really well last year. It's just a matter of the Mets asking if it's what they need.

2) Paul Goldschmidt

It’s not too complicated with Paul Goldschmidt. The downside is his presence on the Mets roster probably means a lot more of Polanco at first base and that might not be something the Mets are comfortable enough with at the moment. Previous Mets rumors have pointed at the team possibly platooning Goldschmidt and McNeil at first base. Unrealistic right now, it’s not out of the realm of possibility for Goldschmidt to share first base with Polanco and maybe even another player; Cody Bellinger wouldn’t be such a bad option.

If Refsnyder’s numbers entice the Mets at all, what Goldschmidt did versus lefties will have them drooling. He batted .336/.411/.570 against them in 168 chances. His weakness was against righties, making him best-used in a role where he faces lefties as much as possible and rarely the right-handed ones.

An actual first baseman wouldn’t hurt the Mets. Many of the same rules apply. The Mets need to remove some parts from their roster to make this work. Having a part-time player on your roster whose only defensive position is first base is a little irritating and not always the greatest plan. With Refsnyder, at least he can play the corner outfield spots and can surely fill in at first base if needed.

This signing would reunite Goldschmidt with Mets hitting coach Jeff Albert. In 2022, Albert was the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals in Goldschmidt’s MVP season.
