3 NY Mets trades to wake up a sleepy MLB trade deadline not involving the LA Dodgers

No, you’re right. There usually are trades by this point. Not just because the MLB trade deadline has been pushed back either. We’re four sleeps away from “the big day” and all we’ve gotten was a C-level trade between the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers. When are the New York Mets, and everyone else, going to wake up?

You have to figure there are certain players holding things up. Notably, it’s Tarik Skubal. He’s the big domino to move before the floodgates open. The Mets have other players they can trade first or moves to make to set off their own string of events.

Skubal is desirable and yet his market will be limited. How many teams will give up the prospect capital to get him? Any of these three Mets trades, which completely ignore the Los Angeles Dodgers, can help get things moving along.

Three Mets trades to wake up the MLB trade deadline

1) Freddy Peralta to the Padres

Freddy Peralta is probably a good match to join the San Diego Padres because of his contract. The remainder of his $8 million makes him incredibly affordable and we know how much the Padres want to save money after handing out several of the sports’ worst deals. Several of their top prospects are pitchers. If they offered Kash Mayfield, the 25th overall pick from 2024, the Mets would have a hard time saying “no.”

2) Clay Holmes to the Diamondbacks

Don’t sleep on the Arizona Diamondbacks like you did in 2023. They are for real and need a bit of help everywhere to get taken more seriously. They could be a really good match for Clay Holmes considering his brilliant ability at keeping the ball on the ground. Their challenge is to outbid teams like the Dodgers for a pitcher such as Holmes. Their top prospect is Demetrio Crisantes who should be playing regularly in the majors next season. A high-contact hitting infielder, he is one option to line up behind Marcus Semien and take the job. The Mets have the space on their roster to keep a backup infielder for another year or two and let him grow into a potential starter.

3) A.J. Minter and Luis Robert Jr. to the Phillies

We’re going mammoth here and we kind of need to in order to wake up the entire MLB trade deadline. Nobody should be more desperate to win this year than the Philadelphia Phillies simply because they are on the verge of taking a step back every year. If that’s the case, they could miss the postseason entirely in 2026. We alert the league by sending them A.J. Minter and Luis Robert Jr. Absorbing those two larger contracts lessens the return for the Mets, but they still can pick up three decent pitching prospects. Pick two ranked ones starting with Cade Obermueller or behind and an unranked one who isn't even 19 or having a really good year. The idea of the Mets and Phillies making a trade itself is large enough to get the rest of the league out of bed.
