2) Trade Mark Vientos in a package to the Padres

A lot of names have been mentioned in the potential Mets-Padres blockbuster that is at two minutes to midnight. No exact Mets players have been named, but we can speculate as to the mix of prospects and big leaguers who could head to Southern California. Whether big or small, there’s reason to believe Vientos could be a part of the trade.

The Padres have left-handed hitting Gavin Sheets on their depth chart for first base with Tirso Ornelas as their DH and batting ninth in a platoon with Luis Campusano, a catcher/first baseman.

Vientos fits the mold as an affordable power-hitter the Padres should seek out in their trade with the Mets. He immediately goes into the lineup in some major capacity, likely bumping Ornelas to the bench or off the roster entirely.

The Padres are trying to compete next year and landing a player of Vientos’ capabilities feels right in this kind of a deal. He’s expendable for the Mets and a good grab for the Padres who’ll have a year to figure out where he fits in. Of course, any trade these two teams make will include a lot more. Vientos, along with some starting pitcher help, makes sense.
