Until 1986, Major League Baseball’s trade deadline was on June 15th, which is significantly earlier than it is now, even before the midpoint of the season. Now, the deadline is typically scheduled for the last day of July or the first day of August. This year, it is on July 31st. But if the deadline was still on June 15th, teams’ strategies would likely be a lot different. The New York Mets will be buyers, regardless of if the deadline was on the 15th or the 31st. However, if they had to make significant trades right now, they would likely target these players.
1) Ramon Urias
The Baltimore Orioles are having a very disappointing season. After winning 101 games in 2023 and 91 last year in 2024, many were hoping the O’s could take a much-needed step forward. Instead, they’re over a dozen games out of the AL East and over five out of a Wild Card spot. That means short-term pieces, like Ramon Urias, are on the trading block.
Urias has been a stalwart in the Orioles’ line-up since making his debut back in 2020. He mixes solid hitting with good fielding at multiple infield positions. Although he’s never provided Silver Slugger-type results in the batter’s box, he’s typically been about average to above average with the stick. 2025 has been no different, as he is slashing .274/.330/.369 with a .308 wOBA, and 99 wRC+.
Urias is walking in 8.9% of his 179 plate appearances, which is the second-highest rate of his career. He is also posting a sub-20% K% at 19%. While Urias has never been a big power hitter, he has a sub-.100 isolated slugging percentage for the first time in his career. He has demonstrated more power in the past, hitting double-digit dingers in 2022 and 2024, with an ISO over .160 in both seasons.
Urias has primarily manned the hot corner this year, where he has +4 defensive runs and +1 out above average. But he has ample experience at all four infield positions. Third base is his best position, but he grades out as an average defensive second baseman and can fill in at both first base and shortstop if the need arises.
Second base and third base are definitely two positions the Mets could use reinforcements at. Their 3B’s own just a .684 OPS, .301 wOBA, 94 wRC+, and just a +0.7 fWAR. Mets’ 2B’s have been even more underwhelimg, with a .615 OPS, .272 wOBA, and 75 wRC+, albeit with an identical +0.7 fWAR. But Urias would give the Mets a decent bat who can field two positions the Mets need reinforcement at. Urias is under control through 2026, giving them an option to help the infield next season.
