5) Trade for Adrian Morejon
Along with acquiring Pivetta, the Mets should be looking to improve their bullpen in a blockbuster deal with the Padres. Adrian Morejon has some of the most mass appeal and with only one year until free agency, he’s probably the one the Padres would move on from.
Don’t view him as a lefty specialist. He can handle himself well against right-handed hitters, dominating the lefties by holding them to a .148/.168/.157 slash line overall last year. Meanwhile, righties batted .216/.284/.297 against him. Morejon is good enough to take down a hitter from either side of the plate,
Even though the Mets already have their duo of A.J. Minter and Brooks Raley throwing from the left side, neither is your typical lefty specialist. Minter is a natural setup man with Raley being right there. With their recent injury history, Minter missing most of last season and Raley coming back from Tommy John surgery, the Mets would be wise to have another southpaw even if he’s not necessarily used in a traditional way.
Hey, if the Mets don’t think Morejon is a fit, Jeremiah Estrada wouldn’t be so bad either. Some sort of improvement to the bullpen is a must. Free agency has some decent seat fillers. A trade is where the Mets can get a truly good arm.
