4) Sign Kazuma Okamoto
There really hasn’t been any indication the Mets are interested in Kazuma Okamoto. The current Mets regime has been pretty good at keeping their desires in-house. Even the alleged locker room issues didn’t begin to come out until after players were traded away or let go in free agency. How much truth there is behind it is a matter of opinion.
Although Okamoto hasn’t been directly linked to the Mets, it does sound like they want a player like him. Seeking a right-handed hitter who can add some power, Okamoto seems to fit the description pretty well.
A third baseman who’ll probably play more first base in MLB, Okamoto pushes Jorge Polanco to the DH spot on a more regular basis. He’ll also give the Mets added insurance at third base in case Brett Baty doesn’t cut it at the hot corner.
Okamoto has regularly hit 30+ home runs in a Japanese league where it isn’t as common as it is in MLB. There’s no replacing Pete Alonso’s power, but Okamoto seems capable of offering the kind of overall upside.
