3) Don’t be afraid to let one of your more beloved prospects go
Is this Mets team built for a championship? Their lack of success since the air conditioners went on seems to suggest they don’t have what it takes. But all they’ll need to do is get hot at the right time. Multiple injuries have held them back. One could make the case they were due for some harsh times after such an incredible start to the year.
The Mets didn’t put forth a full effort at last year’s trade deadline, instead settling for multiple one-for-one deals. This doesn’t need to be the case in 2025. They need exceptional bullpen help to make up for the losses to injury.
Pitching tends to be one of the main focuses of every team at the trade deadline. This year is no exception. The starters expected to get dealt aren’t exactly the most appealing, making the plan of shifting Clay Holmes into the bullpen less of a reality and more of a backup plan in case of emergency.
There are certain prospects the Mets can’t let go under any realistic circumstance. Ones playing positions where they have enough depth are an exception.
Stearns went too light last year, to a reasonable level. The Mets had no assurance they would make the playoffs. This season is far different even if there is no guarantee. This requires more aggressiveness and recklessness by the POBO.
