2) Don’t trust this offense is fine as it is

When David Stearns spoke earlier this week, he didn’t seem too focused on adding a bat. Center field sounds like the one spot he’d be willing to add a bat. This is fine, and always has been, if the team is getting more production from other positions.

Third base, and to some extent the DH spot, are two places of need. Second base is a little wishy-washy with how many different players have taken on that job. There also doesn’t seem to be any suitable second base upgrade out there nor do the Mets need to chase after anything. A center field addition puts Jeff McNeil back there anyway.

The team activated Starling Marte from the IL to give them one more DH option. They still don’t have an ideal lefty swinger for the role. Ronny Mauricio looked like he could have been one choice, but his struggles have him appearing more like trade bait than lineup solution.

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely the Mets will swing big for a hitter in the coming days. It’ll be a mistake to not add someone, even as a part-timer. All of the youngsters have been far too limited offensively to believe one will finally figure it out in August. It doesn’t need to be Eugenio Suarez. Just have it be someone who won’t delight us if his OPS reaches .750.
