While every New York Mets fan is waiting to see what presents, surprises, or disappointments there may be this off season, regardless of what happens, Mets fans may never be satisfied. But there really are three reasons to be a grateful and thankful Mets fan.
1) New York Mets fans have come to love Francisco Lindor
Francisco Lindor was not the guy that Mets fans clamored to play shortstop for them when he was acquired prior to the 2021 season. In fact, Mets fans would make it crystal clear that they would rather have anyone, ANYONE, other than Lindor. There was Xavier Boegarts, Dansby Swanson, Trea Turner, Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, and even Javy Baez. And other than Turner and Seager, the rest are not even worth mentioning…and Correa and Baez? Oy!
Lindor has become the grand prize in that class. He has been the most consistent both offensively AND defensively. While some other shortstops may have nice home run totals, or stolen base totals, or higher batting average…it’s been Lindor who has brought it all to the table. And his leadership has been the biggest asset. He never makes an excuse, he always takes responsibility, and is an exemplary teammate.
And just a few seasons later, those same fans who scoffed at his acquisition, are the ones who insist that Francisco Lindor IS the National League’s MVP and are thankful for him being here.
2) New York Mets fans have a love-hate relationship with Steve Cohen, but mostly love
Heaven knows it could have been anyone…so long as the Wilpons were gone. I mean, M. Donald Grant became a forgotten man once Jeff came on board to drive his father to the brink of abomination in New York. But the purchase of the team by Steve Cohen was something to be thankful for. It ended the misery.
And every Mets fan is grateful to have the money. Well, it’s not THEIR money, it’s HIS money. But you would THINK that it’s the FANS’ money by the way THEY spend it, or attempt to spend it.
But the Mets fans have never even had THAT opportunity, to DREAM about how to spend the money. And Steve Cohen appears to truly listen as he has spent monies that more of thinking AS a fan rather than thinking as an owner who supposedly has an insight into the complexities and realities of making an investment.
The fans have gotten what they wished for, an owner who has the money and is WILLING to spend it. The spending hasn’t always worked out, hence the 2023 fire sale, but the thought is there. And you gotta love that, right?
3) GKR, the best broadcast booth in baseball
Gary, Keith, and Ron. It’s like being able to watch your favorite sitcom every night, only you know the plot is going to be different. Because the team of Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling are, by far, the best television broadcast team in Major League Baseball.
If you listen to an out of town broadcast, or a nationally televised game on a network station, it is tough to listen, often painful to endure. And the commentary on social media during the games is evidence that Mets fans not only prefer the GKR team, they are actually spoiled by their existence.
To be honest, there are quite a number of play-by-play people who do a not only good job, but great job. But there is nowhere that a threesome work together with baseball knowledge, analysis, stories, humor, and most importantly, play-by-play abilities…as a group…as well as Gary, Keith, and Ron.
What other group of fans will have the opportunity to enjoy a broadcast whether their team is winning or, heaven forbid, performing horribly on the field?
Just another thing to be thankful for as a New York Mets fan.
