2) Detroit Tigers
Last year’s surprise playoff team, the Detroit Tigers actually had one of the better outfields in MLB last season. Despite a combined 0.0 WAR in right field, it ranked 11th. This goes to show the state of the position. The same with DH which combined for 0.1 WAR. This ranked 10th.
A strong bullpen makes the Tigers an appealing trade match for the Mets. Much like the Reds, the Tigers didn’t do so well against left-handed pitchers. Their .230 batting average against them was 26th in baseball.
The depth chart currently has Matt Vierling as the starting right fielder which is unimpressive. At DH, they have lefty Kerry Carpenter. It’s a left-heavy lineup with the greatest veteran presence coming from Javier Baez whose future could have him seeing the bench much more frequently.
An attractive component of the Tigers roster are how many optional relievers they have available. While a lefty would be ideal, we shouldn’t pass on going with any righties.
Swapping Marte for a pair of relievers could be seen as a cost-effective move even if the Mets paid his entire contract down. The Mets are better off with two talented optional relievers on their roster than one outfielder who no longer seems to fit. The offense-needy who only had one player steal over 10 bases last year would actually get a boost from Marte.
