3) Mark Vientos

A few good at-bats recently hasn’t resulted in much more for Mark Vientos than some extra walks and some hard-hit outs. His effort doesn’t need to be lambasted. Since the earlier lack of hustle on a ground ball, Vientos has done everything right except actually hit balls where opponents aren’t.

A horrific 9 for 62 start to the season for the slugging third baseman is the biggest disappointment of all on this roster. He was supposed to be right there alongside the veteran sluggers, swatting this team to victory. Instead, he’s sliding down the lineup and struggling to break free.

The amazing thing is even with a .145 batting average, Vientos has a hit in 4 straight games. Has he turned a corner? Returning to Citi Field isn’t the easy answer. He was 3 for 18 without an extra-base hit during their first 6 games in Queens.

Vientos feasted on lefties last year but has started off this season 0 for 10 without even a walk. He’s a guy fans proposed could make a bid to be an All-Star in 2025. Is this his version of a sophomore slump? The team banked on him being “him” once again. There isn’t an alternative. This is something Vientos is going to have to hit himself out of. And hey, we’ll pass him the bottle of whiskey to make it as painless as possible.
