Ronny Mauricio came up to the New York Mets, got a game-winning hit, earned a start, and was sent back to Triple-A. Thanks for playing, Ronny. The longtime Mets prospect can’t seem to catch a break. It’s not entirely on the organization. His injury in the 2023-2024 Winter League on top of failing to establish himself as a big leaguer last year has put him in a difficult spot. He needs to justify staying in the majors.
Yet to do this, he’ll need to hit well in the minors to deserve a recall and have a few other things happen. Unfortunately for the Mets, each is kind of ugly.
There’s no perfect match for Mauricio on the Mets roster this year. Ranked by ugliness, here are three ways he can get back to the show.
How Ronny Mauricio can get back to the majors ranked by the undesirable looks of each of these scenarios
3) The Mets accept him as a member of their bench
Rotting on the bench is not ideal, but it is one way to have Mauricio in the majors again. One can argue he brings more to the table than someone like Jared Young. It’s a matter of roster structuring. At the moment, you can’t make the case based on performance as well.
The Mets aren’t sitting their infielders regularly enough which has Mauricio as an afterthought. It appears his recent promotion was only to buy time until Tommy Pham was deemed ready. Would the Mets actually call him up and play him sparingly? It’s one way to get there and the least unattractive way to do it.
2) Someone gets hurts
Ah, the dreaded injury bug. Any of the infielders going down with an ailment should have Mauricio at least in the conversation for a promotion. He is no doubt the best option to replace Francisco Lindor at shortstop. The same could be said at second base for Marcus Semien. Depending on performance, he might even be the ideal choice at third base for Bo Bichette.
Mauricio is also someone who should be an option if the team loses Brett Baty or maybe even Mark Vientos despite it being essentially an exchange of a righty for a lefty due to Mauricio’s notable struggles while hitting right-handed inthe majors. This is a sensible way to get Mauricio back to the majors. The ugliness is that it means the Mets have lost a regular. Some might question if this is really all that bad depending on who it is. Many haven’t done much this year. Jared Young landing on the IL with his current knee issue is the prettiest way to make it happen.
1) Brett Baty or Mark Vientos are colossal failures
Whoa! What if Brett Baty gets sent down? He has a remaining minor league option. Mark Vientos doesn’t, which would mean giving up on him would require a trade of DFA. Neither are out of the question. The Vientos scenario is Frey Daughter ugly while the Baty demotion is kind of par for the course.
The only thing saving Baty might be his ability to play multiple positions. Vientos, providing the Mets with no offense, is close to impossible to explain to shareholders. Moving on from him might not necessarily even provide Mauricio with the pathway back to the majors. By far the ugliest scenario of all because it guarantees us nothing, it’s precisely what we should believe eventually happens.
