3 NY Mets rumors we’d like to see involving a salary dump trade

MLB rumors have been swirling, not really adding anything new or unique. As far as New York Mets rumors go, it’s much the same. Everyone wants a starting pitcher. Clay Holmes and Freddy Peralta are two of the best available. Any team could use an upgrade in relief. Who’s willing to pay for Luke Weaver? Which clubs need a lefty reliever?

There’s still time before the August 3 trade deadline for a few swerves. In the meantime, fans are left to fantasize about the excitement or disappointment arriving in the coming days. It’s going to take one deal, possibly Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, to get the ball truly rolling. In the meantime, these other trades which seem less related to him are ones we could hear if another team is willing to take on some cash.

The Mets have multiple contracts on the books they’d probably like to be without. Although complicated in each way, these three trade scenarios are very much on the table if the other team is willing to open the wallet.

Three Mets rumors we’d like to see involving a salary dump

Sean Manaea to the White Sox

Allegedly, the Chicago White Sox don’t want to trade any of their top 10 prospects and are open to adding payroll. Have we got a starting pitcher for you! Sean Manaea has pitched well as a starter and if they want someone who’ll cost little more than his 2026 and 2027 salary, they can probably have him for free.

The Mets couldn’t possibly be stubborn enough to believe Manaea’s success as a starter is better than what they could add in the offseason. They definitely need to be careful about selling too much. However, for a good portion of his current contract, Manaea has been hurt or ineffective. Sell him now while you can, if you can. Manaea won't cost the White Sox much at all. The benefit is the Mets open up a rotation spot for next year better used on someone on the upswing, not down.

Bo Bichette to the Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox could use a shortstop. They might even need a third baseman with Curtis Mead getting hurt in his first game. Heck, get creative and have Bo Bichette play some second base. Bichette is a Mets trade candidate in the lightest way because of how complicated it is with his contract. The opt-out after 2026 makes him a complete unknown as far as the future goes. Nobody wants to get “stuck” with him for 2027. They also probably don’t want to pay a price and lose him quickly.

This explains why Bichette isn’t getting discussed much at all in Mets rumors or speculation from other ball clubs. He has the kind of track record to suggest he’ll be better and despite the doubts, he has played third base well. A team like the Red Sox could do worse than trade for Bichette who wouldn’t net the Mets an insane haul anyway. From New York’s perspective, some hesitation to trade Bichette could always have to do with their true desire to have him around in 2027. Bichette could cost the Red Sox a lower-tier prospect with the main goal being for New York to clear his salary and open up the infield for another opportunity immediately.

Luis Robert Jr. to the Marlins

The Miami Marlins lost 12 in a row and then they swept the Philadelphia Phillies. Are they buying or selling? Ask ownership to do a little bit of both and trade for Luis Robert Jr. They can have him for close to free.

Center fielder Jakob Marsee isn’t cutting it with an OPS in the low .600s. An offseason boost from Robert can give them further legitimacy. Plus, with his team option for next year, they can invest in him for another season if things go well and they decide to finally start paying players. The Mets might feel relief to simply save money on Robert. Only guaranteed an additional $2 million if he gets bought out for next year, it’s not completely burdensome beyond this year. Because of this, the Marlins will have to give the Mets something like a Player To Be Named Later. Figure it out in the offseason. That can be based on how well or poorly Robert performs.

The rest of the salary dumps

Nobody is taking Marcus Semien, Kodai Senga, or Jorge Polanco right now. If you want the Mets to dump Francisco Lindor, it's personal. Devin Williams, another high-priced player fans aren't in love with, is worth keeping around and isn't worth near on the trade market as he will be for the Mets in 2027.
