3. Sign Left-handed reliever Scott Alexander
Not only do the Mets have a lot to do in terms of building a bullpen, but they specifically need a reliable lefty, and have for years. As their roster currently stands, the lone lefty-reliever on the team is Danny Young.
Young posted a 4.54 ERA in 2024 and an ERA+ 13% worse then league average. During the season, the Mets won't have the luxury of bringing David Peterson out of the bullpen like they did in the playoffs, and Danny Young simply isn't going to cut it in high leverage situations.
With the Oakland A's in 2024, Scott Alexander posted an impressive 2.56 ERA, and an ERA+ 55% better then league average. Among pitchers with at least 35 appearances, Alexander ranks 6th in OPS against left handed hitters. The 35-year-old is the second most valuable left handed reliever still on the market in terms of WAR in 2024 and fits every criteria the Mets are looking for.
While there is another great left hander available in Tanner Scott, FanGraphs predicts Scott landing a 3-year contract worth $40 million, and the price could increase as the season gets closer. With Stearns' history of not paying pitchers big money, he is going to look elsewhere for a lefty, and Scott Alexander should be at the top of his list.
