A couple of bullpen arms is the bare minimum for the New York Mets to add at this year’s trade deadline. Sound familiar? Children of relief pitchers dread the end of July because they never know whether or not daddy will be present for their first day of school. Relievers swap uniforms more than community colleges switch the books used in their curriculum. How much has math even changed in the last 1,000 years? Seems like a money-grab if you ask me to outdate books every year so students have to buy new rather than used.
At minimum, the Mets will need to add two bullpen arms. One should be a frontline guy with the other being a capable arm with potential to do better. These three relievers appear to be fits for the Mets. Coincidentally or not, each has been red hot lately. The Mets might want to think about making a trade sooner than later.
1) Reid Detmers
Is Reid Detmers the next great lefty reliever? Shifted to the bullpen after years of just not doing enough as a starter, he’s a speculative trade candidate who was actually named as a target for the Mets last month.
The Angels haven’t utilized Detmers in the way you might think considering his career began as a starter. Used for around an inning or slightly more, the recently turned 26-year-old lefty could end up being a sneaky addition to the Mets roster.
Detmers, like the others on this list, is a discussed trade candidate with something different from many of the others we’ll see moved in the coming weeks. He is not about to hit free agency. Detmers is under team control through the 2028 campaign, adding to the price tag.
Considering the tough luck the Mets have had with their lefties this year, adding Detmers to the mix would seemingly prepare them for the future as well. They might even be so bold as to move him back into the rotation. It seems exactly like something David Stearns would do.
Prior to allowing 2 earned runs on Wednesday night, Detmers hadn’t seen his ERA go up since a run scored against him on May 17. June was an entirely scoreless month against him with the exception of one unearned run.
