3 NY Mets prospects who may have been overtaken by a trade deadline addition

The New York Mets farm system looks different these days. After selling off multiple big leaguers at the end of July and into August, they’ve reloaded the minor league system with hopes and prayers. Several draft picks or players brought in by other means continue to rank highly within the system. Multiple newcomers, however, have a chance to overtake the names we’ve been hearing about for several years.

An influx of new talent to the Mets farm is always exciting even when the product on the field for the major league team isn’t. While the Mets have been better than the way they began, there’s no denying the attention for most fans has turned toward what the future holds.

After adding players at all kinds of positions, we have to wonder if these Mets prospects who were already present have now been overtaken.

These Mets prospects could soon get overtaken by these newcomers to the system

1) Jacob Reimer with Jefferson Rojas

Jefferson Rojas is basically the consensus top Mets prospect at the moment. As a shortstop/third baseman who could always even make a move to second base, there are a lot of ways for him to get some quick playing time in the majors. It’s Jacob Reimer who feels a little less impressive. A good representative of what a prospect is, Reimer is hitting in the low .200s this season without enough power to be impressed. Profiling as more of a first baseman than third baseman, Rojas’ superior all-around abilities (including power this season) has made Reimer a bit of an afterthought. Reimer is already 22 and not exactly pushing for a call-up to Triple-A.

2) Ryan Clifford with Billy Amick

Ryan Clifford might need another year in Triple-A. In fact, that’s just about the only direction to go with him. He’ll be lucky to hit .200 this season and with strikeouts continuing to pile up, it’s hard to justify calling him up to the majors other than to wonder if he’s one of those guys who needs the spotlight. For him, it’s Billy Amick from the A.J. Minter trade making him less relevant. Another big power guy with a strikeout problem, Amick has the positional versatility of Reimer (the corner infield) with a bat more closely resembling Clifford. A right-handed hitter as opposed to Clifford who swings from the left side, he might actually end up as a better fit for the Mets in the near future with how lefty heavy they already are. Catching everyone’s attention with 5 early home runs in 7 games, solving his strikeout problem immediately has him passing Clifford.

3) Nick Morabito with Aidan Smith

Nick Morabito is having an okay year in Triple-A. Aidan Smith, the headliner in the Freddy Peralta trade, is having an arguably worse one in Double-A. Their talents are somewhat the same with Smith stealing 41 bases in 2024 and again in 2025. He rates well defensively while not quite hitting consistently enough to prove he really is a future big leaguer to depend on. Whatever the outcome is, Morabito’s current existence on the 40-man roster yet lack of a path to the majors is a suggestion that maybe the timing just isn’t right.
