Jett Williams is one of the most fantastic New York Mets prospects out there, but the team hasn’t been in much of a rush to get him to the majors. Injuries held him back in 2024 but after a brief yet successful finish in Triple-A, they sent him back to Double-A to play the majority of last season. He did well, slashing .281/.390/.477.
Like many Mets prospects, Triple-A was a challenge. He hit .209/.285/.433 with 7 home runs in 151 plate appearances. The speedy middle defender (he plays a lot of shortstop, second base, and center field) remains a question mark for his Mets future even if the Jeff McNeil trade opens up more opportunities in the near future.
Williams is one of those prospects the Mets may need to decide on quickly. Along with his own performance, these other three prospects could bump him onto the trade block permanently.
1) Carson Benge
Most mock trades put together this offseason seem to have a theme of Williams or Carson Benge included. They’re the offensive equivalent of Brandon Sproat and Jonah Tong. Williams is the Sproat while Benge is the Tong. The Benge-Tong duo have only passed Williams-Sproat in the last year. We can understand why. The more popular prospect duo had monster seasons.
However, heading into 2026, Williams and Sproat might be of more use from the get-go. Williams had an arguably better albeit not so fantastic stint in Triple-A. His added defensive versatility with second base and shortstop in his arsenal make him a more intriguing utility player. Benge is your basic everyday outfielder unless he ever decides to pitch again.
Benge winning a center field job for the Mets either right away or early in 2026 makes Williams just that much more irrelevant. It’s the one position left for him to cover a lot of innings with Francisco Lindor locked up shortstop and Marcus Semien brand new to the organization.
Benge is probably more of a left fielder type. In which case, we turn to a prospect even more similar to Williams who could push him aside if he has another awesome year.
