3) John Olerud quietly enjoyed one of the most productive three-year runs in New York Mets history
John Olerud had a nice three-year run with the Mets and, unfortunately, did not stay long enough to be a part of their 2000 World Series team against the New York Yankees. But he WAS a part of that 1999 team that just feel short, but was one of the best offensive teams in Mets history, as well as one of the best defensive teams in MLB history.
Olerud’s three seasons were remarkable. In 1997, he hit .294, 22 HR, 102 RBI. 85 walks, OBP of .400. In 1998, those numbers would be .354, 22 HR, 93 RBI, 96 walks, OBP of .447. In 1999, Olerud would hit .298, 19 HR, 96 RBI, 125 walks. OBP of .427.
During his three-year Mets career, Olerud averaged .306, 21 HR, 97 RBI, 102 walks, and an OBP of .425. And he was an outstanding first baseman, with a .996 fielding percentage during those three seasons.
Olerud performed well, was loved by teammates, fans, the media, not a bad word about him. But wasn’t fond of New York and wanted to go home to Washington so he signed on to play with the Seattle Mariners.
