3 NY Mets players who tricked fans into thinking they should play more than deserved

Fine in a certain role, Mets fans were tricked into thinking they could be elevated up the depth chart.

The 162-game schedule is a long one. Every year we get swindled into thinking some players are better than they actually are. A hot April often has fans begging to see more of someone while a cold start to the season could have us begging for a demotion. Things have shifted greatly for several New York Mets players this year. As spring turned to summer, our thoughts about their roles have shifted, too.

Early in the 2025 season, there was thought that these three players should play more than they actually deserve. Reality has set in. They are what they are.

1) Luis Torrens

Luis Torrens currently is the starting catcher for the Mets but long before the team demoted Francisco Alvarez, fans were asking for a change to occur. Torrens was hitting well and playing remarkable defense. The latter has stayed (for the most part). The former has caught up to Torrens and revealed what he really is: a really good major league backup.

Torrens batted .258/.292/.419 in the first month and followed it up with a big May. In a slightly reduced role because Alvarez had returned, the Mets got more out of Torrens. He slashed .300/.475/.433 in that second month in 25 fewer plate appearances.

Other numbers did dip. He had only one RBI in the entire month of May despite the .908 OPS. He wasn’t fully to blame. Torrens was hitting the ball well.

Unfortunately, Torrens has been on the decline ever since. He hit only .135/.167/.192 with a home run as his lone extra base hit of the month in June. July has been a mess for Torrens. He is now batting .207 on the season with a .588 OPS. When your center fielder is hitting about the same, it becomes harder to accept a lackluster offensive output.
