Players who are close to the end of their careers often find themselves moving from team to team in search of that one last chance at a championship, one more grab at the infamous brass ring. However, when a player who is still in his prime is traded while coming off an All-Star season, great things are often expected. The New York Mets have made several trades like this in hope that it will lead to a championship season.
More time than not, it hasn’t worked out. The reasons why are too numerous to list but they usually involve the player's departure in a futile attempt to relocate the lost glory days. The following players were traded to the NY Mets while coming off an All-Star season only to find that for them, playing baseball in New York wasn’t going to be as successful as they had planned.
3) Tony Fernandez, SS, 1993
On October 26, 1992, the Toronto Blue jays traded shortstop Tony Fernandez to the New York Mets for a package that included pitcher Wally Whitehurst, outfielder D.J. Dozier and the infamous player to be named later, who would eventually become a catcher named Raul Casanova.
Tony Fernandez was coming off his fourth All-Star season when he was traded to the NY Mets for three players in the hope that he would bring some stability to a team in chaos. The 1992 NY Mets had been referred to as “The worst team money can buy” in the book by Bob Klapisch and John Harper.
Fernandez got off to a bad start at the plate and a health problem with kidney stones didn’t make things any easier for him. He was traded back to Toronto, where he had spent his first ten years in baseball, on June 11, 1993 in exchange for outfielder Darrin Jackson. in an effort to escape all the craziness.
Back in New York, things weren't getting any better. By July, Bret Saberhagen was squirting bleach at sports writers, Vince Coleman was tossing exploding M-80’s at fans, and chaos reigned! It would be 1999 before the NY Mets would see the playoffs again.
