3 players with some value the NY Mets can still trade after August 3

The MLB trade deadline is August 3, however, it’s not the end of all trades. This is only the major league trade deadline which means anyone who didn’t appear on the 40-man roster at any point during the year remains eligible to get moved. Those trades don’t yield a strong haul, but can help a team add some depth. The New York Mets, conveniently, have players who fit this description.

It seems like every year under David Stearns includes a small infantry of minor league signings. Fans take notice of this even more so in the post-Jose Iglesias era. Always searching for the next unexpected hero, even the smallest of free agent signings feels like it can be more than a tease.

These three players came to the Mets with some level of expectation and have yet to crawl onto the 40-man roster at all this season. Could the Mets trade one after August 3?

1) Mike Tauchman

You remember him! He was supposed to help bridge the gap until Carson Benge. Instead, an injury late in spring training knocked him into oblivion. We haven’t seen Mike Tauchman yet and we shouldn’t see him at all until at least after the trade deadline. That’s if the Mets don’t find a trade partner first.

There’s little reason to keep Tauchman around and he might even appreciate a chance to join a team in contention. Alternatively, he gets a little bit of a tryout with the Mets or at least some irregular at-bats. There’s no great need for him any longer. The Juan Soto injury does provide one path for him to squeeze in playing time. Of course, if he does make it to the majors, there’s no Tauchman for cash trade coming. Thus far, Tauchman has gone 6 for 21 with a double in his brief time in Triple-A.

2) Cristian Pache

Spring training hero Cristian Pache hasn’t been amazing in Syracuse this year. Even as the team has had needs in the outfield at several points this year, they never saw Pache as someone worthy of a roster spot. The numbers back it up.

Pache has a .233/.286/.355 slash line with 15 stolen bases. An inability to draw a walk, sitting at only 18 all year, and tendency to strike out with a whopping 111 steal desirability. In terms of what role he could play on a contender, it’s pretty simple. Pache is a guy you ask to maybe defend for an inning or pinch run every day. If he picks up a bat, there’s probably a blowout going on.

3) Christian Arroyo

An infielder with a good amount of major league experience and success, Christian Arroyo is someone that could intrigue teams looking for bench depth. He hasn’t taken a major league at-bat since 2023 yet a ridiculous 1.001 OPS through 50 plate appearances against lefties this year in Triple-A is hard to completely overlook.

Nobody’s savior and probably more of a first baseman or DH at this point in his career, Arroyo doesn’t have much value at all. He’s hitting .283/.331/.444 with 8 home runs for Syracuse this season.
