For the first time in 2025 and since Game 5 of the 2024 NLCS, the New York Mets will play ball in their home ballpark. This Friday, the Kings of Queens will be welcomed by the crowd of orange and blue, hosting the Toronto Blue Jays on their turf.
Through six games, the Mets have shown flashes of brilliance, while displaying the all-too-familiar early season rustiness in different facets of the game. Several players have burst out of the gates strong, but others are still finding their footing. Now finally back in the Big Apple, for these three Mets players, perhaps what they need to get themselves back on track is a surge of relief and support from the fans of the orange and blue.
1) Mark Vientos
Coming into this season, the sophomore season of Mark Vientos was going to be placed under the microscope. The 25-year-old has been an embodiment of resiliency and whimsical confidence, using the chip on his shoulder to justify his raw talent plays in the major leagues. An impressive opening performance by Vientos set the stage for an eagerly anticipated encore.
But through the first six contests of the new campaign, the 6’3 pillar at the hot corner has drastically deviated from his shining form. The .083 measly batting average jumps off the lineup card, highlighting a combination of pressing at the plate and unfortunate results. Vientos has also faced the most opportunities of any batter on the team with runners in scoring position and has failed to bring them home. And on the defensive side, a multitude of blunders in Wednesday’s game against the Marlins has magnified Vientos’ early season struggles overall.
We have seen how much Vientos thrives under the bright lights and high-octane environment, especially during last year’s stretch run to get into the playoffs and the improbable run through Milwaukee and Philadelphia in the postseason. If there is anyone who feeds off the fans more and can’t wait to put on a show, it’s the Mets’ everyday third baseman.
