Spring training games are coming up quickly which means several rounds of New York Mets roster cuts along the way. When it comes to creating the roster, a key date is approaching with the arrival of the 60-day IL’s return. When it comes back, the Mets will open up additional space on the team after they transfer Reed Garrett, Tylor Megill, and Dedniel Nunez over.
This will buy them additional roster spots which could be used on elevating players or making additions from outside of the organization. Not everyone currently on the 40-man roster is safe. These three feel like they’re the closest to getting sacked.
1) Vidal Brujan
The only way Vidal Brujan sticks around on the Mets roster is if they’re committed to giving Ronny Mauricio more time in the minor leagues. Brujan is more versatile with outfield experience. However, he isn’t as necessary with Mauricio around even if they’re very different players.
Brujan feels like he’s a bit of insurance in case the team isn’t impressed enough with Mauricio in the spring. They held back from demoting him late last year to save his final minor league option. Letting it go unused to begin the year isn’t a sin. What would deserve a confession is if they let him rot away on the bench.
Players like Brujan seem to be a constant favorite of David Stearns. Yearly and throughout the season, he’s always bringing in these versatile defenders who can’t hit much. A lifetime .199 hitter, a number which I’ve now memorized because of how bad it is, Brujan is a temporary Mets player who’ll buy them time.
There’s always a possibility the Mets even replace Brujan with a better utility man for the bench, pushing him off of the roster and still allowing them to give Mauricio at-bats in the minors. Dylan Moore is a recent example of a better utility player who signed a minor league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.
