3) Ronny Mauricio
Ronny Mauricio returned from a torn ACL suffered in the 2023-2024 offseason in winter ball, which kept him out for the entire 2024 season. While the young infield prospect is back in action, the results haven’t been very graceful. While Mauricio has shown there’s more in the tank, he needs to start translating it into on-field production.
Mauricio has only 77 plate appearances, batting .217/.299/.377 with a .301 wOBA and 95 wRC+. He’s walked in 9.1% of his trips to the plate and has a trio of home runs already. However, he has also struck out 28.6% of the time. His plate discipline numbers are very poor, as he’s chased outside the zone 37.1% of the time, and has a whiff percentage of 32.7%.
At the very least, Mauricio is hitting the ball hard with a 90.4 exit velocity and a barrel percentage of 8.5%. He also has a .323 xwOBA and .417 xSLG%, both of which represent an upgrade over his current bottom line. But the issues with his plate discipline are holding him back from reaching his full potential.
Like Baty, at least Mauricio can provide a glove at multiple positions. He can take the field at shortstop, second base, and third base. However, his defense has looked shaky. Unless Mauricio can start showing some improvements in his plate discipline, the Mets may need to find an alternative and get him more reps at Triple-A Syracuse.
